Dhaka: BNP reserved-seat lawmaker Ferdousi Ahmed Mishti has resigned from parliament following allegations surrounding the attack, vandalism and looting at the Radda MCH-FP Health Centre in Mirpur, Dhaka.

She submitted her resignation letter to Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed at the Jatiya Sangsad on Thursday afternoon.

Speaking to reporters after meeting the Speaker, Ferdousi said, “I came to meet the Speaker. I will abide by whatever decision the party takes.”

Earlier, Prime Minister and BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman reportedly instructed Ferdousi Ahmed Mishti to step down.

The issue of her resignation came into focus following the demolition of the Radda MCH-FP Centre, a mother and child healthcare facility, in Mirpur-1 on Thursday, September 24.

The health centre was reportedly attacked, vandalised and looted late that night. Allegations subsequently emerged of the involvement of individuals associated with different levels of the ruling party.

Ferdousi Ahmed Mishti has also faced controversy over her past political activities. During her tenure as a ward councillor, allegations of extortion, violence and land grabbing were raised against her.

The activities of the Sammona Dokandar Cooperative Society Limited, which came under renewed scrutiny following the demolition of the Radda Centre, have also drawn attention. According to information obtained, several local BNP figures have been associated with the organisation.

In 2006, when Ferdousi Ahmed Mishti was a commissioner of Ward No. 8 under Shah Ali Police Station, she served as president of the cooperative society. Records reportedly show that she signed an application submitted to the Housing and Public Works authorities seeking allocation of the land where the Radda Centre was located, in her capacity as the society’s president.

Her resignation comes amid growing scrutiny over the incident and questions surrounding the political and organisational links connected to the disputed property.
